Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy, Ramsey County and Washington County have developed lessons for educators in the two counties to help students understand their local waste system. Educators, please feel free to use these lessons in your classroom. Lessons are in a video format with an accompanying teacher guide.
In this lesson, students will learn about our solid waste management system and where “away” is when we put something in the trash. We will discuss how the Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy Center processes trash from the two counties to be used for fuel, opportunities to make better decisions with our trash and how each of us plays a role in our local waste system.
The purpose of these worksheets is to provide a pre-post lesson assessment to guide students before and after the video lesson. We use the know-wonder-learn structure which asks students what they know and wonder prior to the lesson, and what they learned and want to learn more about after watching the video. Food is the most common material we throw in the trash. This lesson teaches the importance of preventing food waste and options to better manage food waste. This includes strategies students can use to prevent food waste in their own lives, how food scraps can be recycled into compost for better use and what options are available locally to participate in food scraps recycling.
